Prison conditions and organized crime activity in Sicily

Recent events in Sicilian prisons have highlighted both the release of high-ranking Cosa Nostra figures and critical concerns regarding inmate welfare. In Palermo, several influential mafia bosses have recently been released following the completion of their sentences, including Massimiliano Giuseppe Perrone and Alessandro Alessi. Other prominent figures, such as Cesare Lupo of Brancaccio, are expected to be released soon, while others like Gianni Nicchi and Alessandro D’Ambrogio remain in custody. The movement of these individuals is seen as central to the shifting power dynamics between old and new leadership within the organization.

Separately, the death of a 26-year-old inmate by suicide at the Pietro Cerulli prison in Trapani has sparked political outcry. Sinistra Italiana has called for investigations into the circumstances of the death, questioning why a psychologically fragile individual was placed in an isolation ward. The party noted that previous inspections had already flagged severe issues at the facility, including poor hygiene, high cell temperatures, inadequate healthcare, and problems with water supply and waste disposal.
