Prison conditions in Iran face severe deterioration and neglect

Reports from several Iranian prisons, including Evin, Greater Tehran, and facilities in Isfahan and Gorgan, indicate a severe deterioration in living conditions and systemic neglect of inmates. In Evin Prison, inmates face temperatures exceeding 40°C due to malfunctioning cooling systems, bedbug infestations, and a viral outbreak lacking medical intervention. Additionally, political prisoners are reportedly being held alongside general criminals and narcotics offenders.

In the Greater Tehran Prison, extreme overcrowding has forced prisoners to sleep in hallways, contributing to the spread of skin and fungal infections. Reports also highlight issues with water quality, describing it as salty and unfit for consumption, alongside allegations of corruption and drug distribution networks within the facility.

Individual cases of political prisoners highlight ongoing judicial pressures. Masoumeh Azhini remains detained in Gorgan Prison despite her family providing bail, and Masoumeh Sarbanzadeh, serving a five-year sentence in Isfahan, has been denied leave. These cases underscore a broader pattern of medical neglect and the denial of legal rights for detainees.
