Prison incidents reported in Dijon and Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone
Two separate incidents involving inmates in French prisons have been reported. In Dijon, prison guards intervened on October 23 to assist an inmate in the isolation unit following a suicide attempt by hanging. The UFAP-UNSa Justice union stated that the rapid response and professionalism of the staff were decisive in providing aid to the individual.
In Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone, a 43-year-old inmate was found dead in his cell on a Thursday evening. According to Montpellier Prosecutor Thierry Lescouarc'h, preliminary evidence suggests the death was a suicide. The inmate, who had been detained since Monday, was found hanging by his belt in the arrivals section. An investigation has been opened to determine the exact causes of death, and an autopsy is expected.
The UFAP-UNSa union highlighted the extreme gravity of the situations faced by prison guards and noted significant overcrowding at the Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone facility, reporting 1,116 inmates in a prison with a capacity of 587.
