Prison officials face sentencing for corruption in Chile and custodial death in Mexico

In Chile, a former Gendarmería official at the Linares Penitentiary Center has been sentenced to over seven years in prison for corruption and drug trafficking. The court confirmed that the official accepted payments to smuggle electronic devices, mobile phones, and drugs, including cocaine and ketamina, into the facility for an inmate serving a homicide sentence. The inmate was also convicted of repeated bribery and possession of prohibited items.

In Mexico, four prison guards have been arrested following the release of surveillance footage showing the torture and death of an inmate at the Cereso Estatal No. 1 in Aquiles Serdán. The video depicts penitentiary staff physically assaulting the 45-year-old victim and attempting to drown him. Authorities are continuing investigations to determine if additional personnel were involved in the incident, which occurred in July.
