Prison Raids in Brazil and Peru Seize Contraband and Probe Collusion

Brazilian authorities carried out a new raid on a detention unit after a May 9 prison beating that left three inmates injured. Judges Cecilia Cataldo and prosecutor Martín Bramatti ordered the search, suspecting collusion between inmates and staff. The operation recovered two seized cell phones belonging to inmates Leandro Soto and Cristian Varas, a screwdriver, and other evidence, while a broom handle used in the assault remains missing.

In Peru, police executed an extraordinary inspection of the El Milagro prison in Trujillo as part of the National Citizen Security Plan. The raid focused on pavilion 13, searching twelve cells housing about 130 high‑risk inmates. Officers seized prohibited items such as weapons, cell phones, drugs and other tools that could be used for illicit communication, with forensic analysis pending.

Both operations aim to curb the use of contraband for coordinating external crimes and to address alleged cooperation between prison staff and inmates.
