Prison reform and reintegration discussed at Picentia Books event

During a Picentia Books event in Battipaglia, experts and authors discussed the Italian prison system, focusing on detention conditions, prisoner rights, and social reintegration.

Antonio Sauchella, author of ‘Alba di carta. Memorie di una prigionia’, compared the Italian and French penitentiary systems based on his personal experience. He noted that the Italian model appears less efficient in providing opportunities for social reintegration through work and in maintaining family ties compared to the French system.

Samuele Ciambriello, the guarantor for detainees in the Campania Region and author of ‘Lettere al garante. Voci dal carcere tra diritti, salute e speranze’, presented a collection of letters from inmates. These testimonies highlight critical issues such as prison overcrowding, poor living conditions, and the need for inmates to serve sentences in their home territories to facilitate reintegration and preserve family connections. The discussions emphasized the constitutional principle that punishments should aim toward the rehabilitation of the convicted.
