Prisoner death in Las Tunas attributed to malnutrition and neglect
The legal advisory organization Cubalex has denounced the death of 52-year-old inmate Yales Mir Rodríguez Machado at the Tunas 2 penitentiary camp in Las Tunas. According to the organization, Rodríguez Machado died on October 11 due to severe malnutrition and a lack of timely medical attention.
Cubalex reported that the inmate's health had progressively deteriorated during his incarceration. Despite warnings and complaints from other prisoners regarding his condition, authorities allegedly failed to provide necessary care. Two days before his death, Rodríguez Machado reportedly contacted a relative to express his fear of dying from hunger.
Alain Espinosa, a lawyer for Cubalex, stated that the failure to provide assistance constitutes a form of torture and inhumane treatment. The organization further noted that following his death, the inmate's body was transported via oxcart to the provincial prison headquarters.
