Prisoners in Turkey launch hunger strikes over 'well-type' cell conditions

Cemil Kurt, a member of the musical group Grup Yorum, has issued a statement from Marmara 6 No'lu L Tipi Prison regarding the conditions of 'well-type' cells. Kurt describes these cells as being devoid of sunlight, fresh air, and human dignity, comparing them to notorious international detention centers.

Kurt and other inmates report being held in small spaces, ranging from 5 to 10 square meters, with extremely limited ventilation and minimal access to outdoor areas. Inmates are reportedly allowed only two hours of ventilation time per day, spending the remaining 22 hours in isolation.

As part of a protest against these conditions, Cemil Kurt has been on a hunger strike for 43 days, while Cem Dursun has been on a hunger strike for 117 days. The protest aims to demand the closure of these 'prison within a prison' cell types.
