Prisons in Imperia and Sanremo face overcrowding and staff shortages

The Autonomous Prison Police Union (SAPPE) has raised alarms regarding critical overcrowding and severe staff shortages in the prisons of Imperia and Sanremo. The union warns that current conditions are becoming unsustainable for personnel.

In the Imperia prison, there are currently 73 inmates occupying a facility with a regulatory capacity of 53. Additionally, the facility is operating with only 56 officers out of a required 65, representing a 14% staffing deficit. Giuseppe Giangrande, the provincial SAPPE delegate, stated that while staff continue to maintain security and professionalism, their personal sacrifice cannot be used as a permanent solution to compensate for resource shortages.

The Sanremo prison faces similar challenges, housing 279 inmates in a facility designed for 223. The staffing shortage there is even more pronounced, with only 180 officers present compared to the required 202, leaving a deficit of 22 personnel.
