Prithvi Highway blocked by major landslide at Krishnabhir

The Prithvi Highway, a critical lifeline connecting Kathmandu to other parts of Nepal and external markets, is completely blocked following a major landslide and road subsidence at Krishnabhir on the Nagdhunga–Muglin route. The damage occurred after flooding in the Trishuli River caused significant erosion from the riverbed, leading to a massive landslide.

Officials from the Nagdhunga–Muglin Road Project have stated that immediate reopening of the road at the affected site is impossible. Due to the scale of the damage, permanent repairs and reconstruction could take approximately one year, meaning the route is unlikely to be operational before the Dashain festival. Technical teams from the Department of Roads are currently conducting assessments to determine the safest course of action.

The closure has halted vehicle movement, affecting local businesses, hotels, and shops along the route. In Kathmandu, there are growing concerns regarding potential shortages and rising prices for essential goods, particularly at the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Market. Authorities are currently inspecting several alternative routes to establish a temporary bypass for travelers and goods.
