Private consumption shows signs of stagnation in Dominican Republic and Mexico
Private consumption in the Dominican Republic and Mexico has shown signs of stagnation or slow growth. In the Dominican Republic, consumption—which accounts for approximately 80% of the GDP—experienced a period of weakness. While growth reached 3.5% between January and August 2026 due to tourism, remittances, and credit, research from CREES indicates that since a deceleration began in 2022, private consumption has entered a prolonged period of flattening near neutral levels.
In Mexico, the Monthly Private Consumption Indicator (IMCP) reported 0% monthly variation in July 2026, following previous months of advancement. On an annual basis, Mexican private consumption grew by 1.1%. Data from Inegi shows a slight monthly decrease of 0.1% in domestic goods and services, while spending on imported goods rose by 1.4%. This shift suggests a growing demand for imported goods within the logistics and distribution sectors.
