Private tutoring costs in Italy reach 1,200 euros annually

The private tutoring market in Italy is experiencing steady growth, driven by demand from primary school students through university levels. According to the Letuelezioni 2026 Private Lessons Price Observatory, which analyzed over 94,000 active advertisements, the median cost for one hour of weekly tutoring is approximately 54 euros per month, totaling nearly 500 euros per school year.

When families include extracurricular activities such as music or dance, monthly costs can rise to 134 euros, exceeding 1,200 euros annually. Extracurricular activities, including sports and music, are notably more expensive, costing up to 70% more than basic academic tutoring.

Regional price variations exist, though academic tutoring costs differ by no more than 25% between the most and least expensive cities. However, extracurricular costs show a wider gap of up to 75%. Rome, Milan, and Ravenna are identified as the most expensive cities for academic tutoring, with rates at 15 euros per hour.

In a trend that differs from other European countries, online and home-based lessons in Italy often cost more than in-person sessions due to the perceived value of convenience. For 14 of the 30 subjects analyzed, online rates exceeded in-person prices, such as Italian for foreigners, which costs 15 euros per hour online compared to 12 euros in person.
