Private tutoring market in Spain grows to 2.7 billion euros
Private tutoring in Spain has seen significant growth, with the sector generating 2,782 million euros during the 2023-2024 academic year. This represents a 65% nominal increase compared to the 2019-2020 period, according to a study by EsadeEcPol based on data from the National Statistics Institute (INE).
Research indicates that one in four Spanish students aged 6 to 18 receives private tutoring. The growth in the sector is attributed to families utilizing these services for longer durations and increasing their spending, rather than a higher number of families entering the market. Data from the Fundación la Caixa Social Observatory shows that higher-income families spend 18% more on tutoring than lower-income households.
In response to the trend of prolonged academic support, the educational network Learnis has introduced the Learnis Mind program. The initiative aims to move away from traditional subject-based repetition toward teaching students how to study autonomously, addressing concerns that long-term reliance on tutors may prevent students from developing independent learning skills.
