Priya Manickchand addresses Woolford Avenue vendor displacement
Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand met with vendors along Woolford Avenue in Georgetown to address concerns regarding displacement caused by recent infrastructure upgrades. The first phase of development, which included road expansion and improved drainage, has impacted the ability of local vendors to operate in their usual locations.
Manickchand stated that the removal of vendors was not the objective of the infrastructure works. Instead, the Ministry is looking to restructure arrangements to balance the needs of those who depend on vending for their livelihoods with the area’s redevelopment. Proposed solutions include exploring more organized and standardized vending structures that complement the new surroundings.
Further discussions will involve vendors, school canteen operators, and head teachers to ensure a workable arrangement that maintains safety and order while considering the interests of all parties involved.
