215 Academics Send Open Letter After Priyanka Gandhi Calls IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti a ‘Gaumutra Expert’

During a Lok Sabha debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that the committee overseeing exam reforms included a former IB chief, an IT company owner and a “gaumutra expert.” The comment was interpreted as a jibe at IIT Madras Director Professor V. Kamakoti.

More than 200 senior academicians – 215 signatories including vice‑chancellors, former vice‑chancellors and directors of IITs and IIMs – issued an open letter condemning the remark as mockery that undermines academic dignity. The letter highlighted Kamakoti’s credentials: director of IIT Madras, Padma Shri awardee, author of over 150 research papers, and a member of a high‑level government task force on examination reforms. Several university vice‑chancellors called the comment “not acceptable from any perspective,” and political figures such as Rajeev Chandrasekhar publicly defended Kamakoti and criticized Gandhi’s statement.
