Prizren reports decline in Turkish-language student enrollment

In Prizren, officials are addressing a significant decline in student enrollment that is impacting Turkish-language education. Ferdi Kovaç, a senior official responsible for Turkish education at the Prizren Municipality Education Directorate, noted that the municipality has seen a decrease of approximately 12,000 students over the last 12 years.

This demographic shift has led to school closures and challenges regarding teacher staffing norms. While previous years saw migration from Turkey to Kosovo helping to stabilize numbers, current data suggests that declining birth rates, economic crises, and unemployment are now visibly affecting Turkish-language education enrollment for the 2026/2027 academic year.
