Dominican political parties prepare for 2028 electoral landscape

The Dominican Republic's political landscape is shifting as the ruling Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM) and the opposition Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) prepare for future electoral cycles. The PRM recently completed its internal leadership elections, a process described by observers as mature and stable. President Luis Abinader has been designated as the party leader, alongside new officials such as Secretary General Juan Garrigó Mejía and various vice presidents.

Internal discussions within the PRM are already turning toward the 2028 presidential race. Some political figures, including Elías Báez, have suggested the party should unify around David Collado due to his high favorability ratings. Meanwhile, Tony Peña Guaba is also being analyzed as a potential candidate, though commentators note the challenge of establishing an independent leadership identity separate from his family legacy.

On the opposition side, the PLD continues to focus on membership growth under the leadership of former President Danilo Medina. PLD presidential aspirant Francisco Javier García has criticized the current administration, labeling it a ‘government of breakdowns’ regarding energy, health, and security. As the PRM consolidates its internal structure, the political focus moves toward the upcoming challenge of selecting a unified presidential candidate to maintain the governing bloc's momentum.
