Pro Alps reports decline in single wagon rail freight transport

The Swiss association Pro Alps has reported a continued decline in single wagon rail freight transport. According to new semi-annual data for the first half of 2026, SBB Cargo's performance in this sector fell by nearly 5% compared to the previous year.

While federal contributions of 40 million francs helped reduce the sector's deficit from 40 million to 12 million francs, Pro Alps argues that the financial situation remains unsustainable. The association claims that SBB Cargo is increasing prices, reducing the network, and limiting service offerings, making it increasingly difficult for customers to utilize rail transport.

This trend is also impacting the Simplon line, specifically the Domodossola II terminal, which has seen a loss of attractiveness and a reduction in rail traffic as companies relocate or downsize operations. Pro Alps warns that if logistics cannot be reorganized in the short term, a more significant shift away from rail toward full trains or road transport may occur once alternatives are developed.
