Pro Asyl marks 40th anniversary and warns of threats to asylum rights
The human rights organization Pro Asyl is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Founded in 1986 as a coalition of churches, unions, and welfare organizations, the group advocates for the protection of refugees and persecuted individuals.
During a recent general meeting in Frankfurt am Main, members reconfirmed the existing board. Dr. Beate Wagner was re-elected as chairwoman, alongside Tim Kliebe as treasurer, and Fessum Ghirmazion and Doris Peschke as assessors.
The organization expressed deep concern regarding the current political climate in Germany and Europe. The board characterized the erosion of asylum rights as an ‘attack on the rule of law’ and criticized the new Common European Asylum System (CEAS) as a ‘frontal attack’ on refugee protection. Pro Asyl maintains its commitment to defending human rights and the dignity of individuals amidst the rise of far-right political movements.
