Pro Bahn demands video surveillance in train entry areas

The passenger association Pro Bahn is calling for the installation of video surveillance cameras in the entry areas of long-distance trains. This demand follows a dangerous incident in Bavaria where an ICE train door was opened while traveling at 200 km/h, forcing an emergency stop.

Lukas Iffländer, federal chairman of Pro Bahn, stated that cameras should be limited to entryways and vestibules to provide clarity regarding such interventions without infringing on passenger privacy. The association explicitly rejects widespread surveillance of seating areas, noting that passengers use these spaces for extended periods to work, sleep, or eat.

Pro Bahn suggests that camera installation should be included in tenders for new long-distance trains and modernization programs for existing fleets. To protect privacy, the association proposes that footage be stored in a ring buffer for only a few days and only released to investigative authorities for specific incidents.
