Pro Football Hall of Fame overhauls selection committee
The Pro Football Hall of Fame has implemented a major restructuring of its selection committee, reducing the number of voters from 50 to 28. As part of this overhaul, several prominent figures have lost their voting privileges, including Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy, former NFL executive Bill Polian, and ESPN reporter Lisa Salters.
The decision follows public criticism regarding the exclusion of Bill Belichick from the 2026 Hall of Fame class. Reports suggest some voters had prioritized older candidates to ensure they were inducted before passing away, a rationale that drew backlash.
In response to the controversy, the Hall is eliminating the separate voting category for senior candidates and will mandate in-person meetings for the remaining committee members starting with the Class of 2027 selection process. The 22 departing members collectively represented approximately 280 to 300 years of institutional voting experience.
