Pro Football Hall of Fame overhauls selection process

The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced a sweeping overhaul of its selection process, effective with the Class of 2027. The changes follow significant scrutiny after former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was omitted from the 2026 class during his first year of eligibility.

Key reforms include reducing the selection committee from 50 members to 28, consisting of 25 voting members and three rotating non-voting participants. The previous model, which included one representative from each of the 32 NFL teams, will be replaced by 27 at-large selectors and one representative from the Pro Football Writers of America.

Additionally, the Hall will eliminate the separate “Seniors” category. All eligible players will now compete in a single pool starting five years after retirement. The number of finalists considered at the annual meeting will also be adjusted to a 15-person pool, comprising 13 players, one coach, and one contributor. The “contributor” category will also be expanded to consider a candidate’s entire career, including playing and coaching experience.

President and CEO Jim Porter stated the changes aim to ensure the process is “more rigorous, transparent, and commensurate with the significance of the honor.” The reforms also include a return to in-person annual meetings in February.
