Pro humanis seeks social companions in Graz
The association pro humanis is seeking volunteers for social companionship to support individuals living with mental illnesses in Graz. According to the 2026 Volunteer Report, there is a notable urban-rural divide in civic engagement; while 32.1% of people in small communities participate in formal volunteering, that figure drops to 17.6% in large cities like Graz.
Managing Director Veronika Lutzmann emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that many people with mental health conditions are waiting for companionship. The role does not require professional therapeutic training. Instead, volunteers provide social interaction, such as going for walks, having coffee, or simply sharing daily activities.
Pro humanis provides volunteers with free training titled ‘Introduction to Social Psychiatry,’ along with ongoing supervision and professional support. The organization also offers opportunities for students to earn ECTS credits for their involvement, depending on their field of study and specific requirements.
