House Democrats appoint pro-Israel lawmakers to key Foreign Affairs roles

House Democratic leadership has appointed three pro-Israel lawmakers to senior roles on the House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC) subcommittees. Representative Jared Moskowitz of Florida has been named the top Democrat on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Subcommittee, replacing Representative Brad Sherman. Additionally, Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida and Wesley Bell of Missouri were assigned to the oversight and intelligence and the Western Hemisphere subcommittees, respectively.

These appointments have drawn significant criticism from progressive members of the Democratic Party and pro-Palestinian advocacy groups. Critics argue the decisions are out of step with shifting voter sentiment, noting that polling indicates declining favorable views of Israel among US adults. All three appointees recently won their primary elections against progressive challengers who campaigned on their pro-Israel stances.

In contrast, Representative Mark Pocan of Wisconsin, a progressive critic of AIPAC, was appointed to the Africa Subcommittee. The influence of these new roles depends on whether Democrats retake the House majority, which would allow the top Democrats on subcommittees to serve as chairs.
