Pro-life leader criticizes sentence for man forcing abortion pills on girlfriend

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA Pro-Life America, has raised concerns regarding the legal consequences for individuals who use abortion medication without a woman's consent. She cited the case of Hassan-James Abbas, an Ohio man who was sentenced to six months in prison for forcing abortion pills into his pregnant girlfriend's mouth in December 2024.

Abbas, a former surgical resident, reportedly used his estranged wife's identification to illegally obtain mifepristone and misoprostol. Dannenfelser argued that the relatively light sentence reflects a lack of legal safeguards regarding the growing availability of abortion drugs under current FDA rules, which do not always require in-person physician visits for prescriptions.
