Alan Shearer suggested that both players should have faced sanctions, noting that Fernandes appeared to kick Foden while the latter was on the ground. Shearer described Fernandes’ reaction to the incident as ‘pathetic,’ arguing that if Foden’s retaliation warranted a red card, Fernandes’ actions should have received identical punishment.

Gabriel Agbonlahor also criticized the decision, labeling Fernandes a ‘cheat’ for allegedly exaggerating contact to engineer the dismissal. Further officiating errors were noted during the match, including a goal by Erling Haaland that Pro Ref later admitted should have been disallowed due to an offside violation in the build-up.
