Pro Tips for Men to Wash Hair Effectively

Stylist Rogerio Cavalcante, founder of Brazil Edition and owner of The Second Floor Salon in New York City, advises men to select shampoo based on scalp condition – lightweight and balancing for oily scalps, hydrating for tight or flaky skin, and clarifying for heavy product use or high‑pollution areas.

Celebrity stylist Jerrod Roberts warns against scalding water, noting that hot water opens the hair cuticle and strips natural oils, and recommends warm water instead. He also stresses fully saturating hair before applying shampoo, using a dime‑ to quarter‑sized amount, and emulsifying it in the hands first.

Both experts say the focus should be on the scalp, massaging with fingertip pads in small circles rather than scrubbing with nails. They recommend a minimum of 30 seconds of gentle shampooing (ideally 60‑90 seconds) and a thorough rinse to avoid residue. A second shampoo may be useful for those who use many styling products or sweat heavily.
