Probiotics and fermented foods for gut health

Probiotics are live microorganisms, such as bacteria and certain yeasts, that can provide health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts. They work by influencing the gut microbiota, a community of microorganisms in the digestive system whose balance can be disrupted by illness, dietary changes, or antibiotic use.

Research suggests certain probiotic strains may assist with digestive issues, including some forms of diarrhea related to antibiotic use and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, such as bloating and abdominal pain. However, effectiveness varies by individual and specific product.

Beyond digestion, the gut microbiota interacts with the immune system and helps maintain the digestive tract's protective barrier. Dietary sources of probiotics include fermented foods such as yogurt, kimchi, kefir, and tempeh. While these foods can enrich the diet, probiotics are not a substitute for medical evaluation, especially if severe symptoms like intense pain or blood in the stool occur.
