Processed cereal consumption linked to increased IBD risk
Researchers participating in the international PURE project, including scientists from Wrocław Medical University, have found that the level of processing in cereal products may increase the risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The study analyzed over 140,000 adults across 27 countries over several years, during which 467 new cases of IBD were identified.
The analysis accounted for various factors such as age, sex, physical activity, smoking status, place of residence, and overall diet quality. The results indicated that higher consumption of highly processed cereal products was linked to a greater risk of IBD, whereas no such correlation was found for less processed cereal products.
Experts noted that diet is a critical modifiable risk factor for IBD, and these findings regarding ultra-processed cereals could have significant implications for nutritional guidelines and preventative health strategies.
