Processed foods and restaurants account for 70 percent of salt intake

Approximately 70 percent of salt consumption comes from pre-packaged foods and restaurant meals rather than from salt added at the table. Major sources include bread, cheese, processed meats, ready-made meals, soups, and snacks.

In Sweden, the average daily salt intake is around 12 grams, which is nearly double the recommended adult limit of 5.75 to 6 grams. High sodium intake causes the body to retain water, increasing blood volume and pressure, which can strain the heart and kidneys over time.

Research by the Swedish Food Agency indicates that many restaurant lunches contain high levels of salt that are often not immediately noticeable to the consumer. For individuals who eat lunch out frequently, a significant portion of their daily salt intake is determined by food providers rather than personal seasoning habits.
