Processed meat consumption linked to increased cancer risks

A study conducted as part of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), involving data from over 450,000 individuals, has identified a significant link between processed meat consumption and increased cancer risks.

Researchers found that every additional 30 grams of processed meat consumed daily is associated with a 9% increase in the risk of stomach cancer and a 13% increase in the risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma. The risk is notably higher among heavy consumers; compared to the lowest consumption group, those in the highest consumption group faced approximately a 46% higher risk of stomach cancer and more than double the risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Medical experts, including Dr. Ahmet Rasim Küçükusta, have highlighted these findings, warning that consuming products such as sausages, ham, and salami increases the risk of oral, stomach, and esophageal cancers, and have urged a reduction in processed meat intake.
