ProCompetencia President links free competition to the Dominican rule of law

María Elena Vásquez Taveras, President of the Board of Directors of the National Commission for the Defense of Competition (ProCompetencia), emphasized that free competition is a vital component of the Dominican Republic’s Social and Democratic State of Law.

Speaking at the II International Law Congress organized by the Puerto Plata Section of the Dominican Bar Association (CARD), Vásquez Taveras discussed the connection between constitutional guarantees, democracy, and open economic participation. She noted that Articles 50 and 217 of the Constitution place business freedom and free competition within an economic model aimed at human development, social justice, and equal opportunity.

Vásquez Taveras clarified that competition law does not penalize the size or success of a company, but rather targets anti-competitive behaviors that use market power to unjustifiably exclude other economic agents. She stated, “Competition does not guarantee the success of any company, but it must guarantee that all can compete under open conditions and without unjustified barriers.”
