Procon Maceió mandates cooling measures and reports rising food costs

Procon Maceió has taken action against a supermarket chain in Maceió following consumer complaints regarding extreme heat and a lack of climate control within the store. The consumer protection agency initiated inspections after first identifying the issue during a basic food basket price survey last month.

In response to the lack of air conditioning, the establishment informed authorities that new units are scheduled to arrive on October 1. As an emergency measure, Procon Maceió has ordered the supermarket to provide two air coolers per aisle within five days to mitigate the heat for customers. The agency stated it will continue to monitor compliance to ensure adequate conditions for consumer well-being.

Additionally, Procon Maceió released its latest basic food basket price survey conducted in mid-August. The study found that the cost of the basket varied between R$ 154.37 and R$ 197.80. Comparing comparable items from July to August, the minimum price sum increased by 7.62%, rising from R$ 91.09 to R$ 98.03. Notable price increases were observed in ground coffee, which rose by 33.37%, and cassava flour, which increased by 24.81%.
