Procuraduría Agraria workers relocated to warehouses due to budget cuts
Workers of the Procuraduría Agraria in six Mexican states—including Yucatán, Tlaxcala, Guanajuato, Estado de México, Michoacán, and Mexico City—have been relocated to warehouses, former granaries, and borrowed offices. These moves are a direct result of budget cuts under the federal government’s ‘austeridad republicana’ policy.
According to the 2025 Austerity Report from the Secretaría de Desarrollo Agrario, Territorial y Urbano (Sedatu), spending on leasing buildings and premises has dropped by 59.1% compared to 2024. This reduction has also affected office supplies, printing, telecommunications, and IT infrastructure.
An investigation by Mexicanos Contra la Corrupción y la Impunidad (MCCI) reports that employees are facing severe working conditions. Staff members have reported using their own computers and purchasing basic necessities like toilet paper, soap, and cleaning supplies. In some instances, employees have even contributed personal funds to pay for office rent to ensure services for ejidatarios continue.
The situation in Yucatán is particularly acute. Since January, 39 employees have been working in a facility that previously served as a fertilizer warehouse for the Universidad Autónoma de Chapingo. The workspace lacks windows and air conditioning, forcing staff to work in extreme heat that has reached between 41 and 44 degrees Celsius, with heat indices up to 50 degrees. Workers also reported issues with humidity, lack of water in restrooms, and the presence of local fauna.
