Prodemu faces potential closure amid $2,000 million deficit

The Foundation for the Promotion and Development of Women (Prodemu) is facing a severe financial crisis that threatens its continuity. Minister of Women Judith Marín reported that the institution inherited a deficit exceeding $2,000 million, which could potentially reach $3,000 million. Marín attributed the situation to mismanagement by the previous administration, citing poor execution and union agreements that increased spending and debt beyond the foundation's capacity. She noted that approximately 80% of the foundation's income is currently directed toward salaries and administrative costs.

While the financial instability has raised concerns about the institution's ability to function beyond 2026, Minister Marín stated that the current administration's goal is to restore order rather than close the entity, claiming they have already reduced the deficit by approximately $1,300 million.

In regions such as Chiloé, local social leaders and rural women's organizations have expressed significant concern regarding the potential closure. Leaders emphasize that Prodemu has provided essential training and support programs for decades, and they argue that the institution's debts should not result in the loss of vital services for women in rural territories.
