Prodemu faces potential closure under 2027 Budget Bill

The future of the Foundation for the Promotion and Development of Women (Prodemu) is uncertain following the government's 2027 Budget Bill, which allocates resources for operational expenses and personnel only until March 31, 2027. This timeline suggests the organization will cease operations on that date.

Minister of Women Judith Marín attributed the entity's critical financial situation, involving a deficit of approximately $3,000 million, to changes made in 2022 by former First Lady Irina Karamanos. Marín stated that Karamanos moved agreements to ministries without prior analysis. Karamanos responded via X, arguing that funding from Indap and Sernameg has been part of the Budget Law for years and that the transition of the foundation's appointment to the Ministry of Women did not change this.

Deputy Sofía González has criticized the decision, warning that the closure would leave approximately 50,000 rural women without support for economic autonomy and training. González called on the government to reverse the decision and restore resources to prevent increased economic and social vulnerability among women.
