Produce prices in Brazil drop due to increased supply

Produce prices in Brazil saw a significant decline in August, with some items dropping by as much as 28%. According to the Supermarket Price Index (IPS) calculated by APAS and Fipe, the category experienced an average decrease of 6.5%.

Tubers saw the largest reduction at 17.7%, followed by vegetables at 10.9% and greens at 5.3%. Specific items leading the price drops include common potatoes (-28.7%), cucumbers (-24.8%), onions (-15.3%), tomatoes (-15.3%), and carrots (-13.3%). This downward trend is attributed to favorable weather conditions and high temperatures in major production regions, which accelerated crop maturation and increased market supply.

In regions like São Gotardo, MG, carrot prices have specifically fallen due to the intensification of the winter harvest. Increased availability is being driven by improved phytosanitary conditions, which reduced crop waste, and producers' decisions to advance harvests to avoid potential rainfall. This increased volume of available produce continues to exert downward pressure on market prices.
