Paz Ramírez, prominent Chilean filmmaker, dies in hit-and-run

The Chilean film community is mourning the death of Paz Ramírez, a prominent 39-year-old filmmaker, producer, and screenwriter. Ramírez, who served as the executive director of Alga Estudio, died on Sunday after being struck by a vehicle in the Providencia commune of Santiago.

According to reports and security footage, the accident occurred at the intersection of Avenida Andrés Bello and Manuel Montt. Witnesses state that Ramírez attempted to step back into the street to reach her pet when she was hit by a vehicle traveling at high speed. The driver fled the scene immediately following the collision.

Ramírez was transported to Clínica Indisa by SAMU personnel but passed away later that evening. Her professional legacy includes work on notable productions such as the films ‘No’ (2012), ‘Los 33’ (2015), and the short film ‘Helechos’ (2023).

Carabineros and the prosecution are currently investigating the hit-and-run. Recent developments indicate that authorities have identified the owner of the vehicle involved through its license plate, a Venezuelan citizen, and are working to determine if they were the driver at the time of the incident.
