Product Management Strategies for Optimization and Relevance
E-commerce technology company Rokt is advocating for a strategy of relevance over addition during the transaction moment. The company argues that product leaders should focus on providing the single most useful next action for a customer—such as a product recommendation or loyalty prompt—rather than increasing the number of options. This approach aims to avoid the paradox of choice, where excessive options can suppress consumer action.
As AI agents begin to research and act on behalf of customers, the interface of commerce is shifting. Experts suggest that valuable customer interactions may increasingly occur through agents rather than direct site visits, requiring a shift in how intent and preferences are managed.
In parallel, frameworks for product experimentation are being developed to avoid the 'Local Optimization Trap.' This phenomenon occurs when a team improves a specific metric, such as conversion or engagement, while inadvertently causing damage elsewhere in the product system. To mitigate this, the Optimization Integrity Framework suggests using primary metrics alongside counter-metrics to monitor causal trade-offs, ensuring that improvements in one area do not transfer costs—such as user fatigue or diminished trust—to another part of the system.
