Prof. Dr. Ekber Şahin emphasizes importance of early lung cancer diagnosis

In observance of Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November, Prof. Dr. Ekber Şahin, a Thoracic Surgery Specialist at Medical Point Gaziantep Hospital, highlighted that early diagnosis significantly improves treatment success rates for lung cancer.

Dr. Şahin noted that the disease often progresses without distinct symptoms in its early stages. He identified key warning signs that should not be ignored, including persistent or changing coughs, bloody phlegm, chest pain, shortness of breath, hoarseness, recurrent lung infections, and unexplained weight loss. He specifically cautioned that changes in existing cough patterns are critical for current or former smokers to monitor.

Regarding risk factors, Dr. Şahin stated that tobacco use remains the primary preventable cause, including cigars, hookahs, and other tobacco products. Other contributing factors include passive smoking, air pollution, radon gas, and certain occupational exposures such as asbestos and chemical substances. He emphasized that while these symptoms can indicate other respiratory issues, medical consultation is vital if they persist.
