Prof. Petar Stoyanov warns of systemic crisis in Bulgarian tourism

Historian Prof. Petar Stoyanov said the recent scandals over excessively high seaside prices – such as an €8 fresh juice or a €27 coffee and cake bill in Sozopol – are symptoms of a deeper problem in Bulgaria’s tourism sector. He argued that the industry lacks a long‑term vision and treats visitors as one‑time targets instead of building lasting relationships, noting, “ние не бива да сме търговци.”

Stoyanov contrasted Bulgaria’s approach with that of neighboring Greece and Turkey, where service quality and pricing are more consistent and focused on repeat business. He praised Burgas as an example of good management, calling it “the best place in the world,” while describing Varna as a missed opportunity hindered by poor municipal leadership. He called for professionalisation, training and a cultural shift in attitudes toward hospitality, emphasizing that reliable service, fair pricing and respect for the craft are essential for the sector’s future.
