Profeco analyzes coffee brands for quality and purity
The Mexican Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco), through its National Consumer Protection Laboratory, conducted an extensive analysis of 33 brands of roasted and ground coffee sold in supermarkets. Between February and April, researchers performed over 900 laboratory tests to evaluate moisture, ash, natural fat, caffeine levels, and the presence of undeclared adulterants such as starches and sugars.
The study adhered to the NMX-F-013-SCFI-2020 standard, which regulates coffee quality in Mexico. The primary goal was to verify if the commercial information on packaging matched the actual contents and to ensure consumers receive the quality they pay for.
Precíssimo was identified as the best-evaluated brand, meeting all quality parameters and demonstrating a strong relationship between price and composition without traces of adulterants. Other brands that achieved outstanding results in purity and regulatory compliance included Blasón, Café Garat, and Café La Finca. Additionally, the brand Internacional was noted for maintaining a more accessible price point compared to others.
