Profeco and Condusef warn against risks of emotional consumerism

Mexico’s Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco), in collaboration with the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Users of Financial Services (Condusef), has issued warnings regarding 'emotional consumerism.' The agencies noted that emotions such as stress, anger, sadness, frustration, and even excessive enthusiasm can trigger impulsive spending habits.

These behaviors, often exacerbated by social media comparisons and digital pressure to maintain certain lifestyles, can lead to over-indebtedness, financial stress, and damage to credit histories. To mitigate these risks, authorities recommend identifying emotional triggers and replacing the urge to shop with physical or social activities, such as walking or talking to loved ones.

Financial experts suggest establishing realistic goals, maintaining a detailed expense record, and following the 50/30/20 rule: allocating 50% of income to basic needs, 30% to personal expenses, and 20% to savings or debt repayment.
