Profeco investigates BYD and BMW vehicles following fire and flood reports

Mexico’s Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) is investigating potential recalls for BYD and BMW vehicles following consumer complaints regarding flooding and fires.

The investigation into BYD follows a fatal accident on the Mexico-Toluca highway on September 12, where a hybrid BYD vehicle caught fire after being struck by an Audi SUV. While images show the fire consumed much of the vehicle, including the battery area, authorities have not yet determined the cause. A local prosecutor's office is conducting forensic examinations to establish whether the battery triggered the blaze.

Profeco head Iván Escalante stated that the agency conducts approximately three recall notices per week, which can be initiated by manufacturers or through agency studies. The agency will monitor the findings of the ongoing investigation before deciding on specific recall actions for the affected models.
