Profeco issues Wi‑Fi safety traffic‑light guide for public networks

Mexico’s consumer‑protection agency, the Procuraduría Federal del Consumidor (Profeco), released a three‑color rating system to help users assess the security of public Wi‑Fi networks. The guide, published in the July edition of Revista del Consumidor, classifies networks as green (password‑protected and trusted), yellow (no password and unknown provider, to be used with caution) and red (suspect or duplicate, to be avoided).

Profeco advises consumers not to store passwords in browsers, to refrain from online banking or shopping on unsecured connections, and to verify that websites display the security lock icon. The recommendations target typical public venues such as airports, hotels, malls and cafés.
