Profepa closes Coatepec property for illegal logging

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has issued a total temporary closure of a property in the Chopantla locality of Coatepec, Veracruz. The action follows a public complaint regarding illegal forestry activities at the Club Hípico Consolapa site.

During an inspection on September 2, authorities confirmed the unauthorized felling and exploitation of trees covering approximately 752 square meters. The damage is estimated at 7,323 cubic meters of jonote wood (Heliocarpus appendiculatus). No documentation was provided to prove the legality of the timber harvesting.

The affected area is part of a cloud forest ecosystem, which is considered ecologically fragile and vital for biodiversity, soil protection, and hydrological regulation. Coatepec is noted as a critical forest zone within the Cofre de Perote region.
