Profepa closes four unauthorized wastewater discharge points in Puebla

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has temporarily closed four wastewater discharge points in the Mexican states of Puebla and surrounding areas. The closures occurred in Coronango, San Martín Texmelucan, and San Miguel Xoxtla after inspections revealed the sites were operating without concessions from the National Water Commission (Conagua) or proper treatment accreditation.

The unauthorized discharges flow into the Cotzala, Rabanillo, and Tlapalac rivers, which are tributaries of the Atoyac River. Authorities noted that the responsible parties failed to meet official Mexican standards for water quality, lacked flow meters, and did not provide required annual operating documents or report the specific contaminants present in the wastewater.

Profepa is continuing administrative procedures to ensure compliance as part of ongoing efforts to sanitize and protect the Atoyac River and its tributaries.
