PROFEPA enforces environmental closures in Mexico
The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) has carried out several enforcement actions in Mexico involving the closure of facilities and structures due to regulatory violations.
In San Pablo del Monte, Tlaxcala, PROFEPA imposed a temporary partial closure on a metal foundry and a vehicle emission inspection unit. The foundry was found to be operating without a functional license, emission control systems, or required atmospheric studies, following citizen complaints regarding smoke, odors, and noise. Additionally, a vehicle inspection unit was closed after being found to lack official accreditation and authorization to perform emission tests.
In Lo de Marcos, Bahía de Banderas, PROFEPA closed wooden structures, including a boardwalk and terrace, located in the Maritime Terrestrial Federal Zone (ZOFEMAT). The municipal Director of Public Works, Ramón González Ureña, confirmed the closure was due to the failure to submit a required Environmental Impact Statement (MIA) to evaluate potential effects on coastal dunes. Local authorities are working to prepare documentation to justify the project and prevent the permanent removal of the structures.
