Profepa shuts down illegal charcoal production in Campeche
The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has imposed security measures and closures on forest lands located between the ejidos of Crucero San Luis, Ich Ek, and Xcupilcacab in the state of Campeche.
During inspection and surveillance tours, authorities discovered 12 ovens used for the production of charcoal without proper authorization. While the ovens were out of use at the time of the visit, Profepa ordered a total closure of wood transformation activities at the site as an environmental security measure.
Additionally, inspectors identified tree stumps in two other plots, indicating the selective harvesting of common tropical hardwoods. The affected areas cover approximately 4.5 and 1.4 hectares, with estimated tree volumes of 565.488 and 175.929 cubic meters, respectively. Profepa has suspended all forest raw material harvesting activities in these areas to prevent further irregular activities while their legal status is determined.
