Professional football players prioritize oral and mental health
A recent study published in the journal ‘Sports’ highlights the growing importance of oral health in professional athletics. The research, which compared 29 football players and 21 ice hockey players, found that professional footballers demonstrated significantly better oral hygiene metrics, including lower plaque and gingival bleeding indices, compared to their ice hockey counterparts.
In professional football, dental health is increasingly viewed as a critical component of high-performance care, alongside cardiovascular and physiological monitoring. Clubs such as Hannover 96 have already integrated dental check-ups into their standard athlete support protocols to prevent inflammation and pain from disrupting training schedules.
Separately, former SC Freiburg player Nils Petersen has discussed the challenges of mental health and the transition out of professional football. Petersen emphasized the importance of preparing for life after a career defined by strict discipline and constant pressure, noting the difficulty many athletes face when navigating new professional structures and social reintegration.
